• Sigi Stritzl, a star in the NASL’s early days, died on Thursday at the age of 78. He was involved in a single-vehicle crash near Chestnut Mountain, Georgia, according to local media reports. He starred for Blau-Weiss Gottschee of the German-American Soccer League before moving in 1969 to the NASL, where he was the Rookie of the Year with the Baltimore Bays. Born in Yugoslavia, Stritzl was a key player on the Cosmos when they won the 1972 NASL title. He was capped 11 times for the USA, starting all six games in its 1970 World Cup qualifying campaign.
