Argentina’s River Plate lifted the Copa Sudamericana — South America’s equivalent of the Europa League — with a 2-0 win against Atletico Nacional of Colombia in Buenos Aires onWednesday. The storied Argentine club won the series, 3-1, on aggregate after the teams had drawn 1-1 in last week’s first-leg in Medellin.
The win, River’s third SouthAmerican title after having won the Copa Libertadores — South America’s equivalent of the UEFA Champions League — twice, capped a stellar first season for new coach Marcelo Gallardo.”Thanks to the players, they interpreted how we wanted them to play, they made a great effort,” the former River and Argentina midfielder said. “Today we are in a moment of which I feel proud.”
Gallardo’s men are also still alive in Argentina’s first division race, which will be decided this weekend. River needs to win away to Quilmes and hope that Racing Club loses at home toGodoy Cruz to win the title. A Racing draw coupled with a River win would result in a playoff, as Argentina’s first division does not take goal difference into account.
