The college career of Wake Forest star Katie Stengel, a three-time All-America and the best women’s player in Demon Deacon history, is over. She wasn’t inuniform Sunday for what should have been one of the biggest games of her career, Senior Day against No. 1 Virginia, because of deep-vein thrombosis, a condition that has caused blood clots in her leftleg. She needs to take blood-thinners for at least three months, and she can’t play soccer while on the medication. Says Stengel: “I do want to play professionally after I graduate, andthat’s still a goal for me. This has been tough, but I just want to continue to stay with the team and support them while I’m out.”
