[OLYMPICS COUNTDOWN] Liverpool striker Luis Suarez and Napoli’s Edinson Cavaniare among the 18 players named to Uruguay’s Olympic squad, which is competing in the Olympic competition for the first time since winning a second consecutive gold medal in 1928.

Suarezand Cavani, both 25, played on Uruguay’s 2010 World Cup team that finished fourth in South Africa. Cavani is one of five Italian-based players in the Uruguay squad.

Egidio Arevalo Rios of Mexican club Tijuana is the other over-age player in the under-23 competition for Uruguay, which will play in Group A with host Great Britain,Senegal and the United Arab Emirates.

Brazil is the other South American representative. Argentina, the gold-medalist in 2004 and 2008, did not qualify for the 2012 competition.

South America uses its qualifying tournament for the Under-20 World Cup to determine its Olympic representatives.
