Tyler Terens spent three years as the voice of MLS’s Chicago Fire before serving MLS Season Pass on Apple TV in 2023-2026. He started play-by-play for Fox Sports in 2025 for broadcasts including the Concacaf Champions Cup and Gold Cup.

At 32, Tyler Terens will be the youngest of the Fox Sports announcers working games at this summer’s World Cup. He will be teamed with former U.S. international Maurice Edu, calling at least seven games during the tournament, including at least one round-of-32 knockout game. He talked with Soccer Media Podcast’s John Shrader about this opportunity and his career. 

SOCCER AMERICA: You posted on LinkedIn the day Fox released the names of its game commentators. It was, quote, “I promised myself I would be working the World Cup when it came to North America and that dream has been secured.” What made you think eight years ago that you would be in this position? 

TYLER TERENS: I really couldn’t tell you why I thought that.  Maybe it was, you know, a little bit of overconfidence at the time, especially for somebody who is only about a year and a half into calling games. But I just have such a strong passion for soccer, for soccer commentary specifically. In that moment, I knew I needed to set a really lofty and big goal.

I was calling second division games down in Fort Lauderdale off monitors. I was sort of coming up with a timeline to at least set the goal. And if I fell short, which I thought I probably would, then at least I’m maybe inching closer to something potentially for 2030, or whatever it might be.

SA: Who did you watch or listen to as you were growing up and said, “I want to be that guy?”

TYLER TERENS: When I was growing up and when I was really taking a liking to the game as a fan, I always loved playing. But watching soccer in this country has evolved and progressed from something that was obviously much more difficult 15, 20 years ago than what it is today. 

I always was enamored with Ian Darke and his call of the 2010 Landon Donovan goal.* I was always enamored with Arlo White and his energy and his passion for the Premier League on NBC. John Strong, obviously, has been on so many important calls for Fox and in this country. And it’s just impossible to not throw him onto that list.

*Note: Darke and Donovan are an announcing team for the 2026 World Cup.
