UPDATE: The Red Bulls issued a statement on Thursday that Jesse Marschwill remain as the head coach the Red Bulls. That follows reports of animpending move to Red Bull Salzburg and changes in the coaching staff:

Almost two years to the day after he was hired as head coach, Jesse Marsch could be leaving the New York Red Bulls. OnWednesday, MLSSoccer’s Sam Stejskal reported that Marsch was in serioustalks to take the coaching job at Austrian club Red Bull Salzburg. It was followed by a report from Goal.com’s Ives Galarcep thatsources confirmed Marsch would take the job and be replaced by Chris Armas as the Red Bulls head coach.

Almost two years to the day after he was hired as head coach, JesseMarsch could be leaving the New York Red Bulls.

On Wednesday, MLSSoccer’s Sam Stejskal reported that Marsch was absent from the adidas Combine because he was in serioustalks with owner Red Bull over taking the coaching job at Austrian club Red Bull Salzburg.

It was followed by a report from Goal.com’s Ives Galarcep thatsources confirmed Marsch would take the job and be replaced by Chris Armas as the Red Bulls head coach.

Marsch’s hiring in place of Mike Petke was unpopular among many Red Bullfans as the New York reached the final of the Eastern Conference in 2014.

But Marsch led the Red Bulls to the Supporters’ Shield in 2015 and first place again in the Eastern Conferenceduring the 2016 regular season.

Goal.com reported that the Red Bulls would promote assistant coach Denis Hamlett to technical director.

Red Bull Salzburg coachOscar Garcia was a candidate for the Malaga job in his native Spain and is believed to have other offers.

Red Bull Salzburg is the three-time defending Austrian league champion andsecond in the Bundesliga at the winter break.

  1. Wow, that is a big step for US coaches. Taking over as coach of a team near the top of the Bundesliga would be quite a testament to Marsch’s success in NY and the respect that engendered.

  2. It’s RB Salzberg, not Leipzig. So yes they are top of the AUSTRIAN Bundesliga but that league is not a step up in quality from MLS at all. It may still have been a good career move though since Marsch’s goal is eventually to coach for a top club in Europe.
