USA-PANAMA EXPRESS:
March 20 in Inglewood, California
USA 0 Panama 1. Goals: Waterman 90+4.
Att.: 50,295.

The Mauricio Pochettino honeymoon ended abruptly in stoppage time of the Concacaf Nations League semifinals when Cecilio Waterman’s shot beat goalkeeper Matt Turner to hand Panama a 1-0 win. Los Caneleros failed to threaten the USA for more than 90 minutes but protected their goal well while the USA had 67% of possession. After winning the first three editions of the competition, the USA will be relegated to the third-place curtain-raiser against Canada ahead of Sunday’s final.

GOALKEEPER

Matt Turner punched away a first-half cross but wasn’t required to make a save until Waterman’s shot. From the right side of the penalty area, the shot beat Turner low to the far post. Despite the ball traveling a significant distance, Turner failed to dive quickly enough and his right hand arrived too late (1-0).

DEFENDERS

Left back Joe Scally failed on his attempt to tackle Iván Anderson and ended up in the middle when Waterman received the ball on the left side of the USA’s backline. Scally was rarely called up to defend before that. At the other end of the field, a pair of promising ventures into the penalty area ended with failed passes.
