The USMNT closed out its 2025 calendar with a bang, breezing past Uruguay in a dominant 5-1 win.

The win makes it five matches unbeaten for the Yanks — all against opponents inside the Top 40 of the FIFA World Rankings  — with their five goals matching their best attacking performance during Mauricio Pochettino’s tenure.

With just four friendly matches left before the start of the 2026 World Cup on June 12, it’s starting to feel like momentum is building for this squad heading into the most pivotal tournament in their history.

GOALKEEPER

For the second match running, Matt Freese wasn’t particularly busy. He should have done better on Uruguay’s goal, though, coming off his line to claim a cross but missing, with Uruguay recycling possession and eventually scoring (4-1). It wasn’t a major red flag, but you’d like to see the presumed starting goalkeeper be more authoritative in that moment.

CENTER BACKS

Alex Freeman continued his breakout 2025 campaign with his first and second international goals. The Orlando City fullback was a menace from set pieces throughout the evening, not just on his first goal off a Sebastian Berhalter corner kick (2-0).

Playing as an outside center back in possession and a more traditional right back in defense, he looked incredibly comfortable. He reads the game so well for such a young player, and constantly put himself in spots to break up play and win the ball back. His ability to beat pressure on the dribble and carry the ball forward was crucial.

Neither Mark McKenzie or Auston Trusty were spectacular, but they were both solid. McKenzie, the captain, probably should have done more to organize the backline for Uruguay’s goal, but answered when called on. Trusty was good in the air, and as the game went on he began to push higher up on the left side and combine with the midfield, looking crisp with the ball at his feet, especially on the delicate ball into Freeman’s path ahead of the Orlando youngster’s second goal (3-0).
