The good news first: Tim Weah is available for Marseille when it faces Lorient on Friday night.

Weah was forced off in the 62nd minute of the USA’s 2-0 defeat to South Korea on Saturday due to what U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino later said was a cramp, and he did not play in the 2-0 win over Japan.

A poor game on the left wing against South Korea and the Pochettino’s decision to switch to a 3-4-3 formation raise questions about Weah’s future in the USMNT’s starting lineup.

Weah, 25, has been a fixture, mostly on the right wing, since the end of the October 2021 window when he stepped in for Paul Arriola, injured in warmups, and won the home World Cup 2022 qualifier against Costa Rica 2-1 with a shot that hit the post and then bounced off Tico keeper Leonel Moreira‘s back into the goal.

Weah is perhaps best remembered for the red card against Panama at Copa America, where the USA exited in the first round, costing Gregg Berhalter his job. But in an attack often starved for chances, Weah was probably the most dependable forward of the pre-Pochettino era with big games through World Cup 2022 qualifying and in Qatar and in the 2023 and 2024 Nations League finals (often working in partnership with Sergiño Dest).
