The youngest player in the U.S. team by a month and a half, Joe Scallywas one of the players who may not have been called up had only 23 spots (instead of 26) to Qatar been available. He played himself onto Berhalter’s roster by performing at a high level for Borussia Munchengladbach in the Bundesliga.
Scally’s assimilation into the German game was made easier by a good friend: fellow national teamer Gio Reyna, the team’s third youngest player after Yunus Musah, Scally and Reyna both played for NYCFC’s academy and took a similar path to the European game — but only one of them is a part-time marine biologist.
