Four weeks into the National Women’s Soccer League reveals surprises at both the top and bottom of the standings and breakout performers. With the league paused during for the FIFA international window — to resume April 24 — we assess the most pressing needs for all 16 teams.
1. San Diego Wave (12 points, 4-1-0, W-L-T)
• Keep riding the wave
San Diego are top of the standings thanks to a balanced squad and a fluid attack. Brazilian forwards Dudihna and Ludmila have gotten off to a flying start. Young stars Melanie Barcenas, Kimmi Ascanio and Lia Godfrey are also contributing to the Wave’s fearsome rock. Oh, and record signing Catarina Macario’s Wave debut is still to come.
2. Portland Thorns (10 points, 3-1-1, W-L-T)
• Keep believing
Last season the Thorns overcame key injuries, Sophia Wilson’s absence due to maternity leave, and retirements to club legends Becky Sauerbrunn and Christine Sinclair. They rallied to the NWSL Semifinals. That mentality has not dissipated, even with a brand new coach. The Thorns are off to a flying start.
