Jonathan Klinsmann arrived at Cesena from the LA Galaxy in February 2024 and served as the Italian Serie C team’s third-string goalkeeper.
Cesena won promotion to Serie B and Klinsmann, 28, became its starter in October. The most recent of his 27 starts were a 2-1 win over Palermo in which he saved his second penalty kick in two months and 1-0 wins at Cosenza and at Modena in the season’s final game on Tuesday to enter the six-team playoffs to determine the third Serie A promotion — joining the top finishers, Sassuolo and Pisa.
Klinsmann played college ball at Cal and started for the USA at the 2017 U-20 World Cup before stints at Hertha Berlin and the Galaxy (17 MLS games in 2000-03). His father is of course West German 1990 World Cup winner Jurgen Klinsmann, who starred in Serie A for Inter Milan and coached the USA in 2011-16.
What They’re Saying: “Now Serie A teams are watching him, and even Bundesliga teams are watching him, and his dream is obviously getting back in the national team picture,” Jurgen Klinsmann said on CBS. “Hopefully Mauricio [Pochettino] has an eye on him too. I’m sure that he looks around now everywhere to put his puzzle together.”
