Before the USA’s final practice before its Gold Cup opener, Sebastian Berhalter cracked up the media corps.

Asked if he talked to his dad after his USMNT debut last Tuesday, Berhalter replied with a deadpan, “No, I didn’t talk to him.” Letting the silence hang for a second, he added, “Just kidding” — and when the laughter died down, “He was super happy.”

The 24-year-old son of Gregg Berhalter (44 U.S. caps in 1994-2006) debuted in MLS in 2000 at age 19. Sebastian’s stellar 2025 play for the Vancouver Whitecaps led to his first call-up — from Mauricio Pochettino for the Gold Cup. Pochettino succeeded Gregg Berhalter, the USMNT coach in 2019-2024.

Sebastian Berhalter on …
• On being in camp: “It’s like a dream come true — after like stalking them for the last six years, after being such big a fan of almost every guy here. Now I want to prove that I belong.”

• Post-game dad talk: “He was really proud. I was hard on myself [after the 4-0 loss to Switzerland]. He’s was like, ‘It’s your first game. Take this in.’ I thought I got to the right places, but didn’t win the ball. He gave me some tips on that, the technique of it.”

• Frequent chats: “I always watch his [Chicago Fire] games and he watches mine, and we’ll go over the games. He’s like a best friend. Having him in my corner — his advice and wisdom — is something I’m still using. I’m very fortunate.”
