Bakowska-Mathews leads 'Noles back to final four

[FLORIDA STATE-BOSTON COLLEGE: Women] No. 1 Florida State returned to the Women’s College Cup for the third year in a row with a 4-0 win Boston College. TheSeminoles broke open a one-goal game with three goals in the second half to eliminate the unseeded Eagles, who had scored 10 goals in their first three tournament games.
 
Marta Bakowska-Mathews, who was born in England and now resides in Victoria, B.C., came off the bench to have a career afternoon with two goals and an assist. Thejunior midfielder assisted on the game’s first goal by Kassey Kallman before scoring the third and fourth goals of the match to seal the victory.
 
FSU’s backline of Kristin Grubka, Isabella Schmid, MeganCampbell, Kirsten Crowley and Kallman held BC’s forward trio of McKenzie Meehan, Hayley Dowd and Stephanie McCaffrey to just one shot — in the 88th minute.

“In some ways,” said Seminole coach Mark Krikorian, “I think we have made it look a lot easier than it is. Some teams get there once and never make it back. The consistency that we have established isreally quite good. Obviously, you don’t get there without elite level players with fantastic training habits. The goal is to get there and find a way there and then continue on once you getthere.
 
The win marked the second straight year that FSU has not lost a match at home, pushing its home unbeaten streak to 35 games (34-0-1) — the longest active streak in thenation.
 
Kallman broke the scoreless tie in the 36th minute with a header inside the left post from about six yards out after Campbell sent a cross inside the box thatBakowska-Mathews flicked on to Kallman.
 
The Seminoles broke the match open with three goals, the first off the foot of Michaela Hahn fromabout 20 yards out and then two goals by Bakowska-Mathews, the second from the penalty spot.

BC went into the NCAA Tournament with a 10-10-1 record but ran off three convincing wins toreach the final eight.

“I have to say that I’m really proud of the team,” said Eagle coach Alison Foley. “Mid-season we ran into alittle bit of a tough skid and we learned a lot during that time and got out of it. They say that you do learn a lot about losing and I feel that we did a lot that helped us improve. The attitude thatwe had coming into the NCAA tournament was remarkable with us not being ranked and taking on Northeastern [2-0 win] and then going on the road to defeat [No. 2 seed] Nebraska 4-1.”
