Bayern Munich cruised back to its familiar position at the top of the German league standings on Tuesday with a 4-0 win against Paderborn. The Bundesliga debutant had surprised many with itsconfident start to the season, registering two wins and two draws in its first four matches, but Bayern brought the newly promoted club back down to earth with a comfortable win, thanks to goals fromMario Gotze (2), Robert Lewandowski, and Thomas Muller.

After the game, coach Bayern coach Pep Guardiola said he was more pleased with the manner of histeam’s performance than the fact that the result brought the defending champ back to the top of the table. “We played very well for the first 25 minutes,” the Spaniard said. “Overall,I’m pleased because our buildup play has improved. We’re top now, but that’s not what matters at the moment. What matters is the way we play.”

Winger ArjenRobben, who was involved in three of his team’s goals, said, “It was important to win and lay down a marker.” He added: “We were simply the better team. They had problems closingus down at the start. We made the most of it and took an early 2-0 lead. That’s our first win by a big margin and we need to keep it up.”
