The UK’s BBC is set to spend $1.5 million on a television studio to cover the World Cup after winning a bidding war to film the tournament from the top of a Cape Town hospital. The location, almost1,000 miles from the organisational center in Johannesburg allows presenters to sit in front of a panorama of Table Mountain, Robben Island and the picturesque city’s new stadium.
The BBCis taking around 270 staff to the World Cup, many of whom are expected to stay in a five-star hotel, and 17 commentators. It has estimated it will spend around $17,000 per worker, which takes thetotal bill to around $6 million.
