No. 4 West Virginia had its 16-game unbeaten streak snapped when it fell to No. 23 Texas Tech, 1-0, in the semifinals of the Big 12 Tournament at Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City. The Red Raiders, who came into the game as the tournament’s fifth seed, will play in the conference title game for the first time when they face sixth-seed Kansas, which beat Baylor.

Senior Janine  Beckie, the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, won the game in the 74th minute when she took a pass from senior AlliMurphy and pushed scored from 16 yards. It was the second goal in two days for Beckie, who improved her conference-leading goal total to 26 on the season.

“At the end of theday, we just didn’t finish,” said Mountaineer coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “Janine Beckie is the Big 12 Offensive Player of theYear for a reason. That kid battled all game long, and she capitalized on our mistake. Unfortunately, we couldn’t put any of our opportunities away tonight.”

WestVirginia had 17 shots in the match, but was unable to place one in the goal.

Kansas advanced to the title contest with a 2-0 victory over No. 2 seed Baylor on a pair of goals by Liana Salazar. It marks the third straight season that the sixth seed has advanced to the final.

Neither KU nor Tech has ever won the Big 12championship.
