California clubs shine at Development Academy playoffs

FC Dallas and Real Salt Lake-Arizona were the only clubs to qualify for the U.S. Soccer Development Academy quarterfinals in both agegroups. Five of the clubs that reached the knockout stage hail from California — LA Galaxy, Real So Cal, FC Golden State, Sacramento Republic and Nomads SC.

Thirty-two teams at both U-15/16and U-17/18 divisions completed group play in Frisco, Texas, on Sunday. Quarterfinals take place July 6-7. The semifinals and finals take place in Carson, California, July 14-16.

Last year, FC Dallas won the U-15/16 national title while Real Salt Lake AZ finished U-17/18 runner-up to theChicago Fire.

Both of FC Dallas’ teams won all three of their games. The U-15/16s downed D.C.United (3-0), Chicago Magic PSG (4-0) and Capital Area Railhawks (3-1). Bryan Reynolds, who turned 15 on June 28 and had spent most of the season with FC Dallas’ U-13/14s, scored ineach game. FC Dallas’ U-17/18s beat Shattuck-Saint Mary’s (4-0), D.C. United (3-2) and Orlando City (5-0).

FC Dallas’ U-15/16s are aiming to become the first repeat championsin Development Academy history.

U.S. U-20 men’s team set for NTCInvitational

U.S. men’s U-20 national team coach Tab Ramos  has named a 21-player roster for the 2016 U-20 Men’s NTC Invitational June 26-July 4in Carson, California.

The USA, which is preparing for qualifying play for the 2017 U-20 World Cup, will face Costa Rica (June 29), Panama ( July 1) Japan (July 3). The U.S. roster iscomprised of nine collegians, five MLS players, four foreign-based players, two Development Academy players and one USL player.
