It is rare these days that an NCAA Division I program adds men’s soccer, so Pacific’s rapid rise as a WCC power is noteworthy. In their third season, the Tigers made the NCAA Tournament and beat hostCSU Northridge, 1-0, on Tariq Branche‘s his first collegiate goal.
The win improves the Tigers’ record to 13-3-2 on the year and sets up a second-round match Sunday at defendingchampion Stanford.
“Going on the road is never easy, especially on the West Coast where every team is very good,” said Pacific head coach Ryan Jorden. “We knew we were going to beplaying a very good team that is hot and Northridge has had a very good run at the end. I’m pleased with how our team played throughout.”
The Tigers broke through the Northridge backlinein the 77th minute as Tyson Fox came streaking down the right side and sent a perfect pass to Branche across the box to put in the back.
“We know Tariq is goal-dangerous,”continued Jorden. “It was a great opportunity for him to go in and do his thing. We’re all really happy for him and it was fantastic to watch the guys celebrate with him.”
Pacificreinstated men’s soccer in 2014 after the program had been dormant since 1985.
