Djordje Mihailovic scored his first goal since moving to the Dutch Eredivisie in AZ Alkmaar’s 4-1 win at Go Ahead Eagles.
The 24-year-old midfielder was almost prone to the ground when he met Yukinari Sugawara‘s cross and scored from close range.
The game was Mihailovic’s third for second-place AZ since his transfer from CF Montreal after six seasons in MLS. He admitted the move to the Netherlands was an adjustment.
“Everyday here is intense,” he told Dutch magazine Voetbal International. “Each day you have to work as hard as you can and perfectly possible. Honestly, the first few weeks were a shock. The pressure to get the best out of yourself and each other the intensity and level of training, the switch to a new life in an unfamiliar environment: the transition was more drastic than expected. But now I feel more at home everyday.”
Mihailovic sums up a serious major difference between MLS and clubs in the better European leagues. Training sessions are more serious and more intense, resulting in better fitness of the players. This is painfully obvious comparing the typical MLS match with European pro matches. This is a message to MLS coaching staffs, isn’t it? Yet another way to improve MLS.
