Torsten Frings, the 40-year former Germany midfielder who spent 2011-12 with Toronto FC, is starting his coaching career with Darmstadt, the Bundesliga’s last-place team. He replacesNorbert Meier, who was fired Dec. 5 after five straight losses.

“We are convinced that despite not having a great deal of coaching experience, he will be able to achieve success in his newposition due to his expert knowledge, his ambition and his ability to work as part of a team,” Darmstadt president Ruediger Fritsch said.
