David Beckham set Saturday’s showdown with the Columbus Crew as the date for his return to action with the Los Angeles Galaxy, but he is more likely to playagainst D.C. United a week later.

The Englishman has been sidelined for almost six months after tearing his left Achilles’ tendon and is anxious to play again. His coach, Bruce Arena, is anxious to see that he doesn’t get hurt again.

“He is a guy who likes to defy the odds,” Arena says. “When you say he can’t do something, then you get yourself in a lot of trouble. If it were up to Beckham, he’d have been playing three weeks ago.”

Arena said Beckham was ahead of schedule but cautioned,  “That kind ofinjury is a difficult injury in a sport like soccer, with the kind of agility and power and explosiveness and endurance you need over 90 minutes. We just want to make sure he’s right when he comesback.”
