Bayer Leverkusen goalie Rene Adler appears to have won the battle for the starting job on the German national team for the World Cup. He will the goalkeeperfor Wednesday’s friendly against Argentina.

Coach Joachim Loew had previously said that the goalkeeper against Argentina would likely be hisNo. 1 choice, and goalkeeping coach Andreas Koepke confirmed as much on Monday. “Rene is No. 1 at the moment,” said Koepke. “He has it in his own handswhether he is the No. 1 at the World Cup.”

Adler, 25, should get the nod ahead of Manuel Neuer of Schalke and TimWiese of Werder Bremen. Hannover goalie Robert Enke, another national team contender, committed suicide last fall.
