Miguel Herrera, for one, isn’t impressed with USA coach Jurgen Klinsmann’s inclusion in FIFA’s shortlist for World Coach of the Year. After all, Klinsmann onlyguided the USA men to the Round of 16 at this year’s World Cup, losing 2-1 to Belgium — the same finish as Herrera’s Mexico, following his team’s 2-1 loss to the Netherlands.
Perhaps because of this, and because Herrera himself is widely credited with Mexico’s impressive turnaround following an awful 2013 for El Tri, ESPN Deportes Radio quotes the former ClubAmerica coach as saying: “I don’t know why [Klinsmann] is on the list of the best 10 coaches of the year, maybe because he’s German.”
Nevertheless, Klinsmann on Monday was named to theofficial shortlist for the 2014 coaching award, which includes some of the world’s most well-respected coaches, including Bayern Munich’s Pep Guardiola, Real Madrid’s CarloAncelotti, Atletico Madrid’s Diego Simeone, Chelsea’s Jose Mourinho and Germany’s World Cup winner, Joachim Low. The winner will be announced on Jan. 12.
