[VIRGINIA TECH-GEORGETOWN: Women] No. 5 Virginia Tech showed why it is a national contender with a dominating performance against No. 15 Georgetown, which fell tothe Hokies, 6-1, Friday night at the Virginia Tech Tournament. As impressive as the Tech attack was — it has never scored as many goals against a ranked team — the Hokies’ defense limited the Hoyasto only four shots.

“I was pleased with our play tonight,” Hokie coach Chugger Adair said. “We wanted to get after them, and someof our athleticism and combination play allowed us to create and put away our chances.”

Danielle King opened the scoring with a 35-yard shotin the 12th minute. Two minutes later, Murielle Tiernan made it 2-0 with a diving header off a pass from Shannon Mayrosefor the first of her two goals. Kallie Peurifoy, Ellie Zoepfl and Alani Johnsonalso scored for Virginia Tech.

Grace Damaska‘s goal from about 30 yards at the start of the second half momentarily gave Georgetown some hope. Butthirty seconds later, Mayrose found Tiernan on a counterattack that saw her finish for her second goal of the match.

Tech has now scored 22 goals in five games, the best scoring start inprogram history. It was the fifth straight game the Hokies have scored at least three goals.
