Edgar Valdez Villarreal, the American-born drug lord known as “La Barbie,” told authorities after his arrest Monday that he sheltered Jose Jorge Balderas, the prime suspect in the shooting of Paraguayan soccer star Salvador Cabanas on Jan. 25 at a bar inMexico City.

Balderas, a Balderas henchman, remains at large after shooting Cabanas in the head following a dispute in the bathroom of a Mexico City bar.

Valdez, a key figurein the Mexican drug war, was wanted in the United States for drug smuggling. He said he scolded Balderas over the shooting. “They were friends those two,” Valdez said. “But that day Cabanas was in abad mood and they started to argue.”

Miraculously, Cabanas survived the point-blank shooting and has been recovering in a Buenos Aires rehabilitation center. He recently told a judgethat he does not know why he was attacked.
