The LA Galaxy is tied with Inter Miami on points in the Supporters’ Shield race, but isn’t making it easy for itself.

On Sunday night, it jumped out to a 3-0 lead against San Jose, MLS’s worst team, after 30 minutes but had to hold on on for a 4-3 win before a sell-out crowd of 25,335 fans at Dignity Health Sports Park.

The Galaxy got a goal and an assist apiece from offseason DP signings Gabriel Pec and Joseph Paintsil, but had to scramble after Eriq Zavaleta was red carded in the 70th minute and Jeremy Ebobisse reduced the Quakes’ deficit to 4-3 from the penalty spot two minutes later.

Said Galaxy head coach Greg Vanney, Zavaleta’s uncle, “This league has a way sometimes of reminding you that no lead is a safe lead if you don’t do all the little things right.”
