Everton coach Roberto Martínez on Thursday said the club would reject the transfer request handed in by center-back John Stones, a move that was designed to open the way forthe England international’s transfer to Premier League champion Chelsea. Stones started Everton’s dramatic 5-3 win at Barnsley in the second round of the Capital One Cup on Wednesdaydespite handing in a transfer request the night before. Martinez denied that Stones, who put in a poor performance according to the Guardian, had been distracted by the ongoing link to Chelsea.“We have not rejected [the transfer request] yet because today was a match day and that was our priority,” Martínez said. “We will reject it in the morning and get on with ourbusiness.”
