Why is Christian Pulisic not at the Gold Cup?
It could have been been a one-day, two-day, three-day story, but it has dragged on into its fourth week, and Mauricio Pochettino‘s displeasure was evident on Saturday.
It dominated the USMNT head coach’s remarks on the eve of the Gold Cup against Trinidad & Tobago in San Jose.
Since the USMNT roster was announced on May 22, former national team players turned pundits have day after day weighed in Pulisic’s decision to not play in the Gold Cup.
The discussion took a new turn last Sunday when Landon Donovan, commentating on the Fox broadcast of the UEFA Nations League final, said watching 40-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo “out there grinding” for Portugal made him “think about some of our guys who are on vacation right now, not wanting to play in Gold Cup. It’s pissing me off.”
Pulisic’s father, Mark Pulisic, then responded, via Instagram, telling Donovan (who never mentioned his son’s name) to, in part, “look in the mirror + grow a pair and call names out.”
