MLS is celebrating its 30th season with 30 teams, so the next thing naturally is MLS 3.0, a comprehensive strategy to handle the years ahead.

MLS owners have been slow, often painfully slow, to adopt change, but they appear ready to sign off on a major overhaul of when the league is played, how its teams compete and with what resources they have to sign and pay players.

MLS commissioner Don Garber addressed many of the key moves in his session with the media before Wednesday’s MLS All-Star Game.

Calendar alignment: Switching the MLS season from one based on the calendar year — February to December (regular season and playoffs) — to one used in most European countries — summer to late spring — is a move MLS owners have been wrestling with for a while.
