If you’re deep into the weeds of MLS lore, you’ve probably heard of the “Gass Theorem.” If you haven’t, let me explain.

Named for the former ExtraTime Radio and current SoccerWise host David Gass, this is essentially the idea that a lot of players take time to adapt to MLS after arriving, and that most players who join MLS from abroad won’t fully find their true level until their second season in the league. So if you’re a fan of a team who brought in a marquee signing and didn’t get what you were expecting, fear not! There may yet be hope.

Here at Soccer America, we’re looking at a few new signings from last year who are primed to take a big step forward in 2026.

1. Wilfried Zaha (Charlotte FC)

Just from looking at Wilfried Zaha’s stats from 2025, it might be a surprise to see him included here. His 20 goal contributions in his first MLS season impressed, but perhaps not quite at the level of “he’s Wilfried Zaha, dude” glee among the fanbase when he was signed.

CHARLOTTE, NC – MARCH 1: Wilfired Zaha #10 of Charlotte FC reacts during a game between Atlanta United FC and Charlotte FC at Bank of America Stadium on March 1, 2025 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

In fairness to Zaha, Charlotte doesn’t play progressive soccer. He was visibly frustrated at many points throughout the year, punctuated by moments of brilliance that hinted at a much higher ceiling than what he showed in 2025.

If Wilfried Zaha, 33, maintains his 2025 level, he’ll still be a very good MLS player. A moderate level of improvement would catapult him into the next tier.
