NBC News reports that some Americans celebrated the country’s historic soccer win Sunday night with a vocal minority kicking up a Twitter storm by suggesting that the USA’s 5-2 winagainst Japan on Sunday was payback for the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. While more than 2,400 people died in the surprise assault by Japan on the U.S. naval base in Hawaii, the subsequent atomicbombings of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 killed at least 135,000 people. “Pearl Harbor” mentions on Twitter were 100 times the normal number on Sunday, many from thosecritical of the original Tweets.
