To avoid holding the Africa Cup of Nations in the same year as the World Cup, the Africa soccer confederation (CAF) is switching the tournament to odd years as of 2013. One small problem: thetournament is scheduled to held in Libya, which is in the midst of a civil war. There are no plans to switch the tournament, but that could change when the CAF executive committee meets inSeptember.
“Of course, we are thinking about it as a matter of priority,” CAF secretary general Hicham El Amrani told the BBC. “All the tournamentsthat Libya has agreed to host — not only the Africa Cup of Nations but also the CHAN [African Nations Championship] and the Futsal Championship next year are today still [to be] held in Libya. At thesame time, the CAF executive committee is thinking about plan Bs or plan Cs. We agreed an internal timeline ([or the] latest moment at which we should decide on switching the tournament to anothervenue but as of today the Nations Cup of 2013 is still in Libya.”
Libya already had the 2011 African under-20 championships taken away from it. The tournament was moved to SouthAfrica.
