Bahraini Sheikh Salman Bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, the president of the Asian Football Confederation, might run for FIFA president if the candidacy of UEFApresident Michel Platini, whom he supports, is derailed by a Swiss investigation into a $2 million. “In the case that Platini decides not to stand, or if thereis a reason, such as the Ethics Committee, that he cannot stand, then Sheikh Salman maybe will decide to stand,” Osama el-Shekh, an expert in gulf region soccerpolitics, told Reuters. Sheikh Salman, with lots of connections, would instantly become the favorite to win the election. Platini’s position as the overwhelming favorite has been in part because ofthe support from Sheikh Salman and Kuwaiti Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah, both FIFA executive committee members.
