[USA UNDER-20 MEN] Omar Salgado, the No. 1 pick in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft, is sidelined again with a broken footsuffered during the recent U.S. under-20 national team camp. He re-fractured the fifth metatarsal in his right foot, requiring surgery performed by Dr. BertMandelbaum in Santa Monica, Calif., on Wednesday.
Salgado had initially broke his right foot last June while on international duty, and the injury limited him to seven games in2012.
He missed the Concacaf Under-20 Championship and was considered a long shot to make the team for the world championships in Turkey.
“There is no question that thelast year has been challenging for Omar but we are optimistic and look forward to seeing him back on the pitch in the near future,” Whitecaps head coach MartinRennie said in a statement. “On behalf of the club, I wish him a speedy recovery.”
