[VIRGINIA-FLORIDA STATE: Women] Senior Annie Steinlage‘s first goal of the season gave No. 1 Virginia a 1-0 overtime winover No. 3 Florida State to remain unbeaten at 18-0-0 in front of a school record 3,894 fans at Kloeckner Stadium. The loss was the first for the Seminoles in 18 games.

The Cavaliers had a 13-1 edge in shots after regulation but couldn’t score until Steinlage foundthe back of the net just 54 seconds into overtime. Morgan Brian collected a ball at the top of the box and found senior defender Molly Menchel on the flank. Menchel sent a cross that Steinlage corralled, turned and fired inside the near post for her first goal of the season.

Steinlage played her firstthree seasons at Michigan State before transferring to Virginia, which won its first ACC regular-season title. The Cavaliers will look to be the first team to complete a perfect ACC schedule sinceNorth Carolina in 2006 when they host rival Virginia Tech on Thursday.

“I am really proud of this team and I am really proud of these fans,” said Cavs coach Steve Swanson. “You couldn’t ask for a better result for us and this community that has given us so much support. It was a hard fought game. Florida Stateis an excellent team and is very organized. Our players worked hard and fought and carried the play at times. I am so happy for Annie to get her first goal as a Cavalier in this setting.”

FSU went into the game with a school record unbeaten streak of 17 games (14 wins and three ties).

“Virginia is a very good team,” Florida State head coach Mark Krikorian said. “They are certainly well coached, disciplined and very talented. They have quality all over the field. There is a reason they areundefeated and the No. 1 team in the country and they showed that today.”
