[NORTH CAROLINA-MARYLAND WOMEN] Maryland made history when it beat North Carolina for the first time in 33 games with a 2-1 win over the Tar Heels thanks to apair of goals by junior Sade Ayinde.
“It would be an understatement to say that this is a good day to be a Terp,” said Maryland coach
Courtney Jones gave the Tar Heels the lead in the 5th minute, but the Tar Heels couldn’t put the game away despite a 12-5 edge in shots.
“[Goalie] Yewande [Balogun] and our back line were terrific, our midfield competed their tails off, and the kids up front kept the pressure on UNC’sback line,” added Pensky. “This was a total team effort, but having said that, Sade Ayinde deserves to enjoy this. She came through for her team today. We’re so happy for her!”
Marylandwas playing without starters Ashley Grove and Domenica Hodak due to red cards in the Wake Forest game.
Withthe victory, the Terps improve to 13-2-1 overall on the season and 5-2-1 in the ACC. The five conference wins is the most ever for the Terrapins. UNC falls to 14-2-1 overall and 6-2-0 in theconference.
