The first episode of The Soccer Media Podcast presented by Soccer America is out now!
In “Becoming Andres Cantor,” John Shrader interviews America’s best known soccer broadcaster. While most are familiar with Cantor’s play-by-play and his “Goooaaaal” calls, Shrader prompts Cantor to expand on his personal history.
After moving to Southern California with his family during his mid-teens, Cantor launched his Spanish-language play-by-play career at age 22 while a journalism student at USC.
His family had moved to his native Argentina as part of the Jewish diaspora from Europe.
“That’s my family’s heritage and background, and I’m very proud of it. My grandparents on my father’s side were from Poland. My mother was born in Romania. Her parents fled to Argentina when she was 13. …
“Growing up Jewish in my time in Argentina wasn’t easy. There was a lot of anti-semitism. It did obviously impact the way I grew up.”
Cantor also addresses:
• Adjusting to life in the USA and learning English.
• Starting as a print journalist (including Oscars coverage) and interviewing for a TV job.
• His English play-by-play experiences.
• What he does when people on the street ask him for a ““Goooaaaal” call

“There’s no doubt that Andres Cantor played a major role in popularizing soccer in the USA in the early 1990s. He became a celebrity at that time and when people heard his ‘Goooaaal’ call, even with no previous interest in soccer, they got wind that something exciting was going on.”
— Soccer America executive editor Mike Woitalla, who joins Shrader on the podcast for an update on USMNT player pool ahead of the October friendlies.
