The U.S. women’s national team moved back to the top of FIFA’s world rankings after winning the World Cup for the first time since 1999. Jill Ellis’ team had lostthe No. 1 spot to Germany in December, marking the first time the U.S. wasn’t ranked first in more than six years. In the new standings released Friday, Germany is second after losing to theAmericans in the World Cup semifinal, France is No. 3, Japan No. 4 and England, in its highest ranking ever, is 5th.
