The U.S. women’s national team’s 5-2 victory over Japan in the Women’s World Cup on Sunday attracted an audience of 25.4 million viewers, making it the most the most-watchedsoccer game in United States history, The New York Times reported Monday. It not only exceeded the previous record for a Women’s World Cup of 17.9 million, when the United States beatChina in 1999, but the previous overall record established at last year’s World Cup when 18.2 million watched the United States men’s team play Portugal. An additional 1.3 millionwatched the Spanish-language broadcast of the women’s final on Telemundo. Last year’s Germany-Argentina final in the men’s World Cup attracted 26.5 million viewers.
