Tom Mulroy grew up in Spring Valley, New York, and as a youth played for the famous Blau-Weiss Gottschee club in Queens and then at Ulster Community College. He joined the NASL’s Miami Toros in 1976. After his 13-year playing career — for 13 different teams in five leagues — he became the USA’s most renowned soccer promoter. Mulroy was a 1994 World Cup spokesman after serving on Miami’s bid committee, and his projects have included the creation of Miami’s Copa Latina adult tournament in 1992.
