• Michael Hoyos, who was born and raised in Southern California and moved to Argentina when he was 15 from the Irvine Strikers, converted his shootout attempt to help Ecuador’s  Independiente del Valle beat Brazil’s Flamengo, 5-4, and win the 2023 Recopa Sudamericana, South America’s matchup between the champions of the previous year’s Copa Libertadores and the Copa Sudamericana. Hoyos, 31, who has played for four Argentine and four Ecuadoran clubs in addition to a short stint in Greece, came on as a sub in the second leg of the final, which ended 1-1 on aggregate.
