The USMNT squad Mauricio Pochettino picks for the October friendlies against Ecuador and Australia will give us the greatest indication yet of who he has in mind to take to the World Cup.
That includes the mix of veterans (2022 World Cup holdovers) and newcomers (2025 Gold Cup call-ups) and mix of foreign-based players and MLS players as well as how he intends to line up his team (4-3-3? 3-4-3? Or different looks, based on the opponent or game situation?).
There has been such a state of flux within the USMNT that less than half the players Pochettino called up in September could be in camp next week. And ditto for the 2025 Gold Cup squad (which was much different than the September roster).
The caveat: Roster decisions will depend on the health of his players. Right now, the USMNT has a long list of players whose availability is up in the air due to injuries or fitness concerns.
Where do we begin?
• Ricardo Pepi: The 22-year-old center forward suffered a “mild thigh strain” in PSV’s 2-1 win over Excelsior on Saturday and will miss the October window. (He was held out of the September window as he returned to action following a knee injury that sidelined him for seven months.)
